About the event

Maidenhead Boundary Walk is based on an ancient custom called Beating the bounds. Its roots go back to mediaeval times when parishes reaffirmed their boundaries by processing round them at Rogationtide, stopping to beat each boundary mark with wands and to pray for protection and blessings for the land.

Today Maidenhead has expanded outside the old boundaries of the town, but you can still find the old boundary stones (see photo on right), and this is the route we follow for the annual Charity Boundary Walk.
Even for people who do not walk this far very often, 13+ miles is not too much if you look about you, chat to others, enjoy the day. If you don’t fancy that then there is a shorter route option and new for this year a 5k family walk starting and finishing at Boulters Lock Carpark.

There is an entry fee to take part in the event to help cover the costs of first aid attendance, insurance etc. This stands at £6 per adult and £1 per child under the age of 12 for the full walk and £3 per adult and £1 per child under the age of 12 for the Family Walk.

Safety Guidelines

All participants are requested to take part in a safe way and to adhere to our guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone, so please:
  1. Park vehicles appropriately
  2. Be careful when crossing and walking on roads
  3. Check on the weather, and take suitable clothing, especially lightweight waterproofs for a unusually cold and wet October, you never know you might even need sun cream, as you can never predict the British weather!
  4. Wear comfortable and appropriate footwear
  5. Consider hydration and plan your refreshments, rests and toilet breaks
  6. Don’t forget to take your maps!
  7. Protect our environment, take your litter with you and look after your dogs
  8. Please be neighbourly and keep noise to a minimum
  9. Tell other people where you are going and at what time, so someone can raise the alarm if you do not return.
  10. Ensure your phone is fully charged before you go and consider taking a battery charger with you
  11. Carry emergency contact details with you (think about track and trace)
